    A favicon is the tiny square picture that stands for a website. You see it on a browser tab, in a list of saved sites, and sometimes beside the web address. It is often a little version of the site's logo. Tech people just say favicon; the word has become the normal name, not a cute nickname. It comes from an old file, favicon.ico, that an early browser looked for — "favorites" (the American word for those saved-site lists) plus "icon." You do not choose it for fun as you browse; the site itself puts it there so you can spot the tab in a hurry.
