Faux means not real, but made to look real. Faux fur looks like animal fur but is not; faux leather looks like skin but is not. English borrowed the French word and mostly kept the French look on the page. People use it when they want to say "fake" without sounding as cheap — on clothes and furniture, faux can even sound a bit stylish. Though actually, you also hear faux pas, a social mistake, "a false step"; that is the same French word, but a different job. The sense you will see on labels is the "looks real, isn't" one. It is a bit fancy, and still feels French.
