If someone is fatherly, they are kind and gentle in the way people picture a good father: calm, protecting, ready to help, a little serious. A fatherly smile, fatherly advice, a fatherly arm around your shoulder. It names a manner, not a fact. You do not have to be a dad to be fatherly — though people still say it more about men, and that old picture sits inside the word. It is warm, not cold or official. You can also use it as an adverb (to speak fatherly), but most people now say in a fatherly way.

組成father + -ly (having that quality). From Old English fæderlīċ. There is also an old adverb, “in a fatherly way,” from Old English fæderlīċe. Doublet of fatherlike.
