In old Greek and Roman stories, the Fates are three goddesses who decide each person’s life. One picture of them is a thread: one makes it, one measures how long it will be, and one cuts it — and that is the end of a life. People still say the Fates are with me or the Fates are against me when luck is good or bad, even if they do not believe in goddesses. Write it with a capital F when you mean these three. Though actually, this is story-talk and a set phrase, not a claim about how the world really works.
