Fatalistically is how someone does a thing when their attitude is fatalistic. They shrug fatalistically. They smile fatalistically. They accept the news fatalistically — meaning they take it as already decided, and they do not reach for a new plan. It modifies a verb: it tells you the manner, not the fact of death. The word is long and a little ; in speech people more often say ‘like it was meant to happen’ or just shrug. When a writer chooses fatalistically, they want you to see that small giving-up in the way the person moves or speaks. Though actually, the nearby adverb fatally is a trap with a wholly different job: fatally wounded means wounded in a way that causes death. One letter-string looks like the other. They are not safe substitutes.
