A fascinator is a small, pretty object a woman wears on her head at a dressy event — a wedding, a horse race, a garden party — usually feathers, net, beads, or flowers fixed to a little comb, clip, or band. It is not a hat. A hat has a brim and covers more of the head; a fascinator sits lightly, like a bright bird that decided to land in your hair. The word is especially British: at a British wedding you will see rows of them. In many other places women say “headpiece” or just wear a full hat. Though actually, the name is older than the party accessory. A fascinator was first a person or thing that fascinates — that holds your eyes — and later also a lacy scarf.
