Something far-reaching has a great influence or effect. It reaches a long way into other parts of life: a far-reaching law can change many people’s days; a far-reaching decision can still matter years later. You will hear it in news, school, and serious talk more than in chat with friends. It can praise or warn, depending on whether the effect is welcome. It does not mean the idea is unlikely — that is , a neighbour that only looks the same.

Having a broad range, scope, or influence.
- There was, however, one proposal which, had it reached fruition, might have had far-reaching effects. This was for the amalgamation of the Caledonian, the Edinburgh & Glasgow, and the Scottish Central Railways, for which a Bill was promoted, but rejected by the Parliamentary Committee on the grounds that the preamble was not proved.
