Far-out means very strange or unusual — not just a little different, but oddly out of the ordinary. It can describe clothes, ideas, art, or people, and it is informal. Though actually, in the 1960s and 1970s young people also used far-out to mean “great” or “cool,” like a louder fantastic. That “cool” use now sounds dated, like something a parent might say to be funny. The meaning this entry is for is the “weird in a strong way” one.
