Fancywork is that is there to look beautiful, not to a hole or hold cloth together. Think embroidery, decorative stitches, little flowers on a cloth — the kind of needlework people once showed off on cushions and . Fancy here means “not plain; made pretty on purpose,” and work is the old home- sense of work. It is a rather old-fashioned word; many people now just say embroidery or needlework. You would not use it for building a table or for any job that is merely difficult. It is cloth, thread, and decoration.
