Famed means well-known: people have heard of this person, place, or thing. It very often comes with for: a city famed for its food, a doctor famed for her research. It is a little more literary than famous. Famous is the everyday word; famed sounds like a or a plaque. You can also set it in front of a name: the famed actor. By itself it does not say whether the fame is good or bad — only that many people know the name. Though actually, in real talk famous still does most of the work, and famed likes the pattern “famed for …”.
