A Falstaffian person is like Shakespeare’s Falstaff: large in body, warm and funny, fond of a good time, and too fond of drink. It can sound almost fond — a Falstaffian laugh, a Falstaffian appetite — but it also hints that the person is not careful, and not always honest. It is a , colourful adjective. You will meet it in reviews and essays more than in the street. It always points back to that one fat knight. You do not need to have read the plays to feel the picture, though actually the word is doing extra work if you have: it carries the whole messy man, not just “fat and jolly”.
