A falling-out is a bad quarrel, the kind that cools or breaks a friendship. “They had a falling-out” — after that, they may not speak for a while. It is a noun; the matching verb is fall out (with someone). Informal, a little old-fashioned in some mouths, still very alive in others. Though actually, a falling-out is not always a screaming fight. It can be a quiet break after one sharp disagreement over money, a slight, or a stupid joke. Students sometimes think it means falling down outdoors; it does not. You have a falling-out with a person, not with a staircase.
