A fallback is the thing you still have if the first plan, supply, or method fails — a spare road, not a fall onto your back. People say a fallback plan, a fallback option, a fallback career. Neutral, very common in offices and tech: if the main system dies, there is a fallback. Though actually, it is not always a full second plan; sometimes it is only “the less good thing we will accept.” As an adjective it sits in front of a noun: fallback position. You may still see a (fall-back); one word is usual now. It comes from fall back, as in an army moving back to a safer line.
