The Falklands are a group of islands in the southwest Atlantic Ocean, east of southern Argentina. They are under British control. Though actually, many Argentinians say the islands belong to Argentina, and they call them the Malvinas — same islands, different name, and a long, sore argument. In 1982 Britain and Argentina fought a short war over them. In English news you will almost always see Falklands (or Falkland Islands); in Argentine talk you will hear Malvinas. The name is a place name, so you meet it in geography, history, and . People who live there are often called Falkland Islanders.
