Fairtrade — often with a capital F, written as one word — is a brand name. It belongs to the group now called Fairtrade International (it used to be Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International). That group sets rules for how some farm goods, such as coffee, tea, chocolate, and bananas, should be grown and bought, so that farmers get a more stable price and safer work. If a packet carries the Fairtrade mark, the group is saying the product met those rules, and the group also controls who may put that mark on a label. The wider idea is fair trade, two words, not a brand. People mix the two all the time, and some shops are happy to let them blur. Though actually, a Fairtrade mark is not a promise that the food is organic, or grown nearby, or perfect in every way — only that it passed this group’s checks. In Taiwan you will often see the English mark sitting next to the words 公平貿易.
