A faery is a fairy: a small magical being in stories, or, in older writing, the whole other world those beings belong to. The spelling is the point. Faery (and faerie) is the old, literary coat of the word. Poets and fantasy writers put it on when they want woods, mist, and a little danger — not a pink toy with sparkly wings. Everyday English fairy, and that is the word to use in class unless you are quoting a poem or a fantasy map. The sound is the same, or nearly: FAIR-ee. If an author Faery with a capital F, they often mean the land, a place, not one little creature.
