You can think of facebook as exactly what its two pieces say: a book of faces. Before any website existed, a facebook was a real book — small photographs in a grid, a name printed under each one — and its job was recognition: a room full of strangers turns into people you can name. Everything later grows out of that job. A website does the same thing for millions of people at once. Your own page inside it is your face and your name, the single entry in the book. And the verb is what you do with a book like that: you go to it to find a person.
Wiktionary's entry derives the site name from the earlier common noun facebook (and its earlier forms TheFacebook and Facemash), and derives that noun from face + book, likely modelled after namebook.
