A face-saving action or arrangement helps you keep other people’s respect after a mistake, a loss, or an awkward moment. You may still have failed, but the deal lets you leave with your dignity. Bosses offer face-saving exits; countries sign face-saving agreements. Here face does not mean the front of your head. It means honour — the respect you have in public. English speakers talk this way about “saving face” and “losing face”; the picture is very close to 面子, and the English phrase grew from that way of thinking, though it is now fully at home in news and office life. 「face-saving」用來形容一個行動或安排，讓人在犯錯、失敗或尷尬時，仍能保住別人對自己的尊重。例如「face-saving exit」是老闆提供的保全面子的台階，讓你即使沒成功，也能體面地離開。國家之間也會簽「face-saving agreement」（保全顏面的協議）。
這裡的 face 不是指臉，而是公開場合的名譽與尊重，也就是中文說的面子。英文也有「saving face」（保全面子）和「losing face」（丟臉）的說法，畫面和中文很接近。這個字現在在新聞和職場裡很自然，語氣偏正式。
