    A face-saving action or arrangement helps you keep other people’s respect after a mistake, a loss, or an awkward moment. You may still have failed, but the deal lets you leave with your dignity. Bosses offer face-saving exits; countries sign face-saving agreements. Here face does not mean the front of your head. It means honour — the respect you have in public. English speakers talk this way about “saving face” and “losing face”; the picture is very close to 面子, and the English phrase grew from that way of thinking, though it is now fully at home in news and office life.
