The stories often mix truth and wonder, so the thing can feel almost too special to be ordinary. You use the word when you want the flavour of legend, not a dry fact. It is a little literary: you will see it in books and documentaries more than in the shop. Though actually, fabled does not mean “someone made it up.” It means “wrapped in old stories,” which may be true, half-true, or hard to check.
