An eyot is a small island in a river. It is a British word, and you meet it in place names — especially along the Thames — and in older or local writing. Many British people still say those place names even if, in a normal sentence, they would just say a little island. It is a landscape word, not a conversation word for most : a tiny piece of land with water all round it, sitting in the stream. Another spelling of the same word is ait.
河中小島(英國用語;台灣日常幾乎不會碰到)
組成From Middle English eyt, eit, from an Old English diminutive — a “little” form — of the old word for island (īg / ēg), which is also the first piece of island. The same old island-word sits behind English ey (“island”) and behind ait, another spelling of this word.
