Exultation is the feeling — or the showing of the feeling — when you are extremely happy and proud because you have succeeded. It is the noun that sits beside the verb : not “to show you are happy,” but the joy itself, or the public burst of it. You can speak of a moment of exultation, or say their exultation was obvious. It is formal, written English. News and novels like it; friends in a café almost never say it. Though actually, the feeling can be private as well as loud — a quiet exultation in the chest after a hard exam is still this word. What it is not: everyday “happiness.” It wants a result, a win, a door that finally opened.
