Externalization is the act of taking something that lives inside you — a feeling, a fear, a thought — and putting it outside, so it can be seen, said, written, or looked at. A private ache becomes a story; a tight feeling in the chest becomes words in a room. This is the sense that teaches: inner life made outer. Though actually, in psychology the same noun also names a slightly different move: treating an inner problem as if it were a thing out in the world (sometimes that helps a person look at it; sometimes it is a way of not owning the feeling).
