An expressway is a wide road built for cars to go fast, with few stops — often through or around a city. Traffic lights are rare or gone; you get on and off by ramps. In American English this is an everyday road-sign word. In British English people more often say for the big national roads. Though actually, the tidy picture (“no stopping at all”) is tidier than life: some city expressways still have busy merges, and in some places the name is used a bit loosely for any fast main road. It is not just any big street with shops and lights; the idea is through-traffic, speed, and as little stopping as the city will allow.
