Expostulation is the noun that belongs with expostulate: the act of speaking up like that, or the words themselves. One expostulation can be a single protest; a scene full of them is people reasoning hard against a plan. It has the same formal, slightly old air as the verb. In easy English: a strong, protest — the kind you make because you care what the other person is about to do, not only because you want to win.
