In maths, exponential growth means a quantity keeps multiplying by the same amount each time, so it grows slowly at first and then extremely fast - very different from steady, add-the-same-amount-each-time growth. In everyday talk, people borrow the word loosely just to mean 'extremely fast and still speeding up' - 'exponential growth in sales.'
