Exploratory means you are doing something in order to find out more, not because you already know the answer. Doctors may do exploratory surgery just to look inside. Two countries may hold exploratory talks before any real deal. Scientists run an exploratory study to see if an idea is even worth a big test. The point is the looking, the try, the first map — though actually the word does not promise that you will like what you find.
