To explicate an idea is to open it up and explain it in careful detail, piece by piece. Teachers and scholars explicate a poem, a theory, or a hard paragraph. It is not the everyday verb for “tell me why.” You explain a late train; you explicate a text. The Latin picture is unfolding, like opening a folded cloth so you can see the whole pattern. You will meet it in school and university writing more than in chat. There is a rare old adjective too, but almost everyone who uses the word today is using the verb.
