To expiate a wrong is to show you are truly sorry by accepting punishment, or by doing something hard to make the wrong better. People expiate a sin, a crime, or a guilt. It is an old, formal, often religious word. You will meet it in books, church talk, and stories about shame — not when you bump someone on the MRT and say sorry. Though actually, it is stronger than “say sorry.” Sorry is words. To expiate is to pay, suffer, or repair until the wrong feels answered. Everyday English says make up for it or pay for it; expiate is the heavy name.
