An exorcist is someone who tries to make an evil spirit leave a person or a place. In some churches this is a real role, with prayer and a set rite. In films it is a dramatic job — shouting, holy water, a family. The word is serious in religious talk and a little spooky in everyday talk. Though actually, many students meet it first from a famous film, so they picture a Catholic priest; other traditions have people who do similar work, and they may not use this English word.

A person, especially a priest or priestess, who is a practitioner in exorcism to force out evil spirits or demons from a living being.
