The exigencies of war, of a fire, of a money crisis: all the must-do’s that the trouble forces. It is a formal, slightly bookish plural; you meet it in news, history, and careful prose more than in talk. Though actually, people do use the singular exigency, but this shape — exigencies — is the one writing likes, as if the hard moment always comes with a bundle of pressures, not just one. It is close to “what the emergency requires,” not a fancy synonym for emergency alone. If you can wait, or choose freely, you are not yet in the exigencies of anything.
