    Your ex is the person you used to be with: a former girlfriend or boyfriend, or a former husband or wife. It is informal and very common (I saw my ex at the station). Though actually, it is not only for people who were married — boyfriends and girlfriends count too. The word itself is fairly neutral; the feeling around it often is not. In careful or formal English, people more often say former wife or ex-husband. This is not the test (exam), and not the letter X; those are different uses of the same spelling.
