Eventing is a horse sport. One horse and one rider do three different tests, usually over three days. First they do : a quiet, careful dance in an arena, to show that the horse will listen. Then they do cross-country: a long, wild ride over jumps, water, and hills, which is the dangerous, heart of it. Then they do showjumping: coloured fences in an arena, against the clock. The same pair must be good at all three, not just one. People also call it a three-day event. It is an Olympic sport. The word looks as if it might mean holding events or planning a party, but in sport English it has this one tight meaning. Riders and commentators say it without thinking; other people may need it explained.
