    In the Church of England — England's old national church — there is a service late in the day, when the light is going. That service is evensong. People sit in a church, often a big old one, and they hear prayers, Bible readings, and a lot of singing. Choirs love evensong; some of the most famous church music in English is for this hour. It is not a concert, though it can feel a little like one if the singing is very fine. It is worship. The even here is an old word for evening; we almost never use even that way now, except in poems. So evensong is, piece by piece, evening song. There is a morning sister-service called matins, but that is another word. Evensong feels old, gentle, and very English. You would not use it for a pop concert at night, or for any song you happen to sing after dinner.
