When differences slowly disappear — things "even out". Prices go up and down but even out over the year; one team wins today, the other tomorrow, and it evens out. You can also use it on things: "even out the frosting on a cake" means make it flat and smooth. When there is an object, it can split: "even the surface out" or "even out the surface"; a pronoun must go in the middle: "even it out".
