Eusébio (full name Eusébio da Silva Ferreira) was one of the greatest football players the world has seen. He was born in 1942 in Mozambique, which was then a land ruled by Portugal, and he played as a striker — the person who scores — for Benfica in Lisbon and for Portugal in the 1960s and 1970s. People called him the Black Panther because he was fast and strong in front of goal. He won Europe’s top player prize in 1965 and was the top scorer at the 1966 World Cup, where Portugal came third. Some older dictionary lines still write (1942–) as if he were alive; he died in 2014. In Portugal he is remembered the way Pelé is remembered in Brazil — a name that means football itself.
