An ancient Greek , roughly 480–406 BC, one of the three great writers of tragedy along with and Sophocles. Nineteen of his plays survive — far more than either of the others — including Medea, The Bacchae, The Women and Electra, and they are still and still studied everywhere. What makes him worth a line in a student's notebook is what kind of writer he was. Where earlier tragedy dealt in heroes and gods, Euripides put ordinary, damaged, furious people on stage: women pushed past what they could bear, , refugees, characters who question the gods openly. Audiences of his own time found him uncomfortable and he won few prizes; later ages have often thought him the most modern of the three. In English you meet the name in literature and history classes, and as a byword for a certain kind of dark, psychological drama. Pronounce it yoo-RIP-i-deez — four , stress on RIP, and the ending is 'deez', not 'dess'.
組成From Greek Eurīpídēs. The -idēs ending in Greek names generally marks descent — 'son of' — and the name is usually connected to the Euripus, the strait between Euboea and the Greek mainland, near which he was said to have been born. Beyond that I would not push it.
