A long river in the Middle East. It rises in the mountains of eastern Turkey, runs south-east through Syria and then across Iraq, joins the near the bottom of Iraq, and the combined river into the Persian Gulf. It is about 2,800 km long, the longest river in western Asia.

組成The English form comes through Latin Euphrates from Greek Euphrates, which the Greeks took from Old Persian Ufratu. Behind that stand much older Middle Eastern names — Akkadian Purattu and Sumerian Buranun. So the Greek shape, which looks as if it might contain eu- 'good', is really just Greek ears reshaping a far older local name; scholars are not agreed on what that original name meant.
