The adverb of euphemistic: in a soft, indirect way that avoids saying the hard thing straight out. In real writing it appears in a few very fixed patterns, and knowing them is most of knowing the word. The commonest by far is 'euphemistically called / known as / referred to / described as X': 'a small room euphemistically called a study', 'what is euphemistically known as an enhanced interrogation'. Here the writer is naming the soft label and, at the same time, quietly telling you not to believe it. Another pattern is 'to put it euphemistically', which works like 'to put it mildly' — you flag that your own words are softer than the facts. It can also modify a verb of speaking: 'he spoke euphemistically about the layoffs'. Almost always the adverb carries a small raised eyebrow. It is a written-and-formal word: you will meet it in newspapers, essays and reports far more than in conversation, where people just say 'they call it X, but really…'
