Eugenics is the idea that you can “improve” human beings by choosing who is allowed to become a parent. Francis Galton made the word in 1883. People who believed in it talked as if some families were good stock and others were not, and they wanted the “good” ones to have more children. In the twentieth century, governments used this idea to stop some people having children at all, to keep groups apart, and — in Nazi Germany — to kill people they called unfit. Because of that history, eugenics is not a calm science word today. When someone uses it, they are usually naming a cruel programme, or accusing someone of thinking that way. It is formal, heavy, and it carries strong . Though actually, you will still meet older books that treat it as if it were simply a branch of biology; that is how the believers talked, not how we should.
組成Coined by Francis Galton in 1883. From Greek ἐΰς (eǘs, “good”) + γίγνομαι (gígnomai, “breeding”): “well-bred”, “good in stock”. Parallel to the name Eugene. By surface analysis, eugenic + -s.
