Eugenics is the idea that you can “improve” human beings by choosing who is allowed to become a parent. Francis Galton made the word in 1883.

People who believed in it talked as if some families were good stock and others were not, and they wanted the “good” ones to have more children. In the twentieth century, governments used this idea to stop some people having children at all, to keep groups apart, and — in Nazi Germany — to kill people they called unfit.
