The Eucharist is a Christian ceremony, and also the holy bread and wine used in it. Christians say the bread and wine represent — or, in some churches, truly become — the body and blood of Christ. The word can mean those things themselves, or the whole service around them. Catholic churches live inside this word every week; many Protestant churches say Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper for the same kind of meal. Though actually, churches do not all agree on what happens to the bread and wine — some speak of a real change, some of a strong symbol — but they share the act of giving thanks at that table. The name itself comes from “thanksgiving.” It is a church word, usually capitalised, and it sounds formal even to native speakers who never go to church.
組成From Ancient Greek eukharistía, “gratitude, giving of thanks” (eu- “good / well” + kharis “favour, grace”). It came through Church Latin and Old French, and took the place of the older native word husel.
