A eucalyptus is a tall tree, most famous in Australia. The leaves hold an oil with a strong, sharp smell; people put that oil in cough sweets, chest rubs, and cleaning sprays. Koalas live on eucalyptus leaves. There are many kinds — some with smooth pale bark that peels in sheets. In Australia people often say eucalypt. Though actually, if you live in Taiwan you will meet the oil more often than a living forest: a bottle in a pharmacy or a convenience store may be your first eucalyptus. The word is long, but it is the ordinary name, not a rare lab-only word.
