The EU is the European Union: a political and economic group of countries, mostly in Europe, that work together on trade, laws, and travel. It grew out of a 1957 agreement, the Treaty of Rome, in western Europe. The idea was to make trade easier, keep the peace between neighbours, and stand stronger next to other big economies. It used to be called the EC, the European Community. Though actually, Europe and the EU are not the same thing. Europe is the continent; the EU is the club. Not every European country is in it — the UK left, and places like Norway and Switzerland stay outside. People say “the EU” in news, , and business. It is an abbreviation, always in capital letters.
