Etna — usually Mount Etna — is a mountain in , in southern Italy. It is the highest volcano in Europe, and it is still alive: it throws out ash and lava every few years. People farm on its sides because the soil is rich, though actually that also means the danger never really goes away. In news and geography you will see Mount Etna; older writing and some company names use the Latin-looking spelling Aetna. It is a proper name, so we capitalise it. When English speakers say Etna on its own, they almost always mean this volcano.

組成From Latin Aetna, perhaps through Italian Etna. It may come from Ancient Greek Aítnē, or from aíthō “to burn,” or from a local Sicanian word meaning “fiery one.” Those ideas all go back to a root meaning “burn; fire.” Doublet of Aetna.
