    Ethiopia is a country in the Horn of Africa, in the north-east of the continent. Its capital is Addis Ababa. dictionaries still sometimes say it sits on the Red Sea, and that was true for a long time — but though actually, it does not touch the sea today. became a separate country in the 1990s and took that coast, so Ethiopia is now . People still call it one of Africa’s oldest independent nations: it was not up in the way many neighbours were, and students meet the victory at Adwa in 1896. The messy bit is that Italy did occupy it from 1936 to 1941, so “never colonised” is tidier than the full story. A 2014 count put the population near 94 million; it has grown a lot since then. In English the name is ordinary and neutral — news, maps, and school books all use it.

組成From Latin Aethiopia, from Ancient Greek Aithiopía, from Aithíops, of Proto-Hellenic origin. It replaced an Old English name, Siġelhearwena land, literally “land of the sun worshippers.”
