Estonia is a small country in northern Europe, on the Baltic Sea. sits to the south, Russia to the east, and Finland is across the water. The capital is . It is one of the three Baltic countries, together with and Lithuania — though actually its language is not like theirs, which the map makes people guess.
It was part of the Soviet Union until 1991. It joined the European Union in 2004. A little over a million people live there.
English borrowed the name from Medieval Latin Estonia. Early Latin also had forms like Estia and Hestia. The name may go back to a people called the Aestiī, whom the Roman writer Tacitus mentioned about 98 AD. Older English once said Ēstland (you can still hear Estland in German, and similar names in Old Norse and Icelandic). Those older English names have been replaced; the country is Estonia now.
In English the stress sits on the second part: ess-TOH-nee-uh. Use a capital E; it is a place name, not a common noun.
組成Borrowed from Medieval Latin Estonia. Other early Latin forms were Estia and Hestia, possibly from the tribal name Aestiī in Tacitus (about 98 AD). It took the place of Middle English Ēstland, from Old English Ēstland. Compare Old Norse Æistland, Icelandic Eistland, German Estland.
