Esthete is the American spelling of : a person who loves beauty, art, and fine style, and who often treats taste as a serious part of life. An esthete may care a great deal about painting, clothes, rooms, or sentences, and may look down on what seems ugly or . The word can be neutral, but it can also sting a little — as if the person cares more about how things look than about how people feel. In British spelling you will usually see , with ae. The idea sits next to aesthetic (about beauty and taste), not next to ascetic (a person who gives up comfort). Those two are almost opposites, and students mix them because they look alike.
