An essayist is a person who essays — short pieces of thinking in prose, often about , society, books, or how we live. The essayist’s job is not mainly to tell a made-up story (that is a novelist) and not mainly to report today’s news (that is a journalist), though one person can be all three. The voice is often personal: “here is how I see this.” Some famous writers are remembered as essayists even when they also wrote novels. The word is neutral and a little literary; you meet it in books and reviews more than in casual chat.
