Espresso is a small cup of very strong black coffee, made by pushing hot water through finely ground coffee under high pressure. It is an Italian drink, and the word is Italian too. In a café, “an espresso” can mean the drink or the cup itself. It is the base for many other drinks (a or a starts here), but espresso on its own is short, thick, and often topped with a thin golden foam called crema. People who love coffee use the word carefully; calling any strong coffee “espresso” is a bit loose. Though actually, two popular stories about the name are probably wrong. Some people say it means the coffee is made “expressly” for you, or that it is named for speed, like English express, “fast.” Those ideas are easy to like, but they are not the story most language historians accept. The name is from Italian espresso in the sense “pressed out.” Early machines even sold it as “cream coffee” (è crema) because of that crema on top.
