Esperanto is a language made on purpose in 1887 so people from different countries could talk without one side having to use the other’s mother tongue. A Polish-Jewish eye doctor, L. L. Zamenhof, published it. He signed the book Dr. Esperanto — in that language the name means something like “one who hopes” — and the name stuck. The language was first called Lingvo Internacia, “international language.” The grammar is meant to be regular, and many word-pieces will feel familiar if you already know a European language, so can move faster than with a natural language. It never became the world’s shared tongue; though actually a living community still speaks it, in it, and holds meetings. The English name is a borrowing of that same Esperanto word; it shows up in English by 1892.
