Escrow is a holding pattern for money, land, or a signed paper. Two people have a deal — say, buying a house — but they do not yet trust the moment enough to hand the money straight across. A third person, not in the fight and not in the family, holds the money or the deed until both sides have done what they promised. Then that holder lets it go.
