    Escrow is a holding pattern for money, land, or a signed paper. Two people have a deal — say, buying a house — but they do not yet trust the moment enough to hand the money straight across. A third person, not in the fight and not in the family, holds the money or the deed until both sides have done what they promised. Then that holder lets it go. We say the money is in escrow, or they put it in escrow. It is a lawyers’ and house-buyers’ word, very common in American English. In Taiwan the everyday hook is often 價金履約保證, which is not the same system, but it is the idea students already have: a third party holds the payment until the deal is real. Though actually escrow is not a gift, not a tax, and not your own savings account: you cannot spend it while it sits there. As a verb, to escrow something is to put it with that third person.
